Maritime Optima Scholarships for Master Students

In cooperation with NTNU, Maritime Optima AS is announcing scholarships for students who want to write master's theses based on machine learning (ML) and/or commercial shipping.

Maritime shipping vessels are fitted with a GPS tracking system called Automated Identification Systems (AIS) and Maritime Optima has access to global historical and real-time AIS data from more than 600 terrestrial and satellite senders for over 65 000 vessels continuously updated in real-time. This data provides insight into the traveling patterns of ships and can, for instance, also be used to predict future destinations for vessels. The 65 000 vessels are structured into segments and subsegments, and each of the ships has a comprehensive technical description attached. Maritime Optima also has maritime weather, routes, maps, etc. Maritime Optima AS is a company with machine-readable maritime data and industry knowledge, and we want to learn and be challenged by ambitious master students. You are invited to study how digital technologies are changing and challenging the different maritime organizations at all levels: strategy, management, decision making, organizational structures and work processes, competencies, and skills. As a master student, you are invited to use your technical knowledge and the data, the industry knowledge, and our relevant network to look into topics such as:

  • Predict the future behavior of a specific shipping market / defining routes between connected regions for route planning.
  • Knowledge-based vessel position prediction for estimation of destination (place and time) within different segments and subsegments.
  • Study of what impacts and how to improve the prediction of the trade volumes in various shipping markets.
  • How will the public's focus on carbon footprint and transparency change the maritime industry and create new business models?
  • Financial models based on AIS data.
  • Estimate savings, carbon footprint, and different grades of fuel and availability vs. optimal speed & consumption for different types of vessels?

If you have a proposal for a master thesis, we would also like to hear from you.

Maritime Optima AS has the opportunity to grant two scholarships of NOK 25,000 per semester. The applications are assessed based on the master's thesis' relevance to Maritime Optima, the student's academic qualifications, and project description. All students who are affiliated with a master's program in programming, machine learning, finance, or international economics can apply.

Relevant skills:

  • Programming in data analytical languages and tools such as Python, R, etc.
  • Data structures and databases.
  • Programming skills in Golang.
  • Machine learning, or the ability to learn data science and machine learning.

We require that the assignment is completed within a reasonable time and achieve a grade of B or better to the final 20 % of the scholarship to be paid out.

We established Maritime Optima AS in April 2018. Our company is privately funded by serial tech entrepreneurs and shipping investors. In addition, we are supported by Innovation Norway and Norwegian Research Council.

This is mainly done through a solid big data (AIS) foundation, a sea routing engine, and letting users create teams where they can enrich the data platform with their private team data and analysis. By intuitively presenting the data and making it possible to “play” with it, we give our customers the ability to utilize their company’s collective knowledge.
