An employee form Maritime Optima working at his desk.

Experienced Data Engineer

About us

Maritime Optima AS was established in April 2018. We are privately funded by serial tech entrepreneurs and supported by Innovation Norway. We were awarded the Copernicus price in 2018 and the Microsoft Startup program in October 2019. We are working closely with some of the largest global ship-owning communities while developing Maritime Optima. The first MVP of Maritime Optima was launched in August 2020. One year later, we have more than 11 000 registered users.

We believe in knowledge driven maritime intelligence based on quality data. So in Maritime Optima, we are building a software product for the shipping industry, which aids them to make more informed decisions. This is mainly done through a solid data foundation and with manual enrichment by users, which they can share with colleagues. By presenting the data in an intuitive manner and making it possible to “play” with it, we give our customers the ability to utilise their company’s collective knowledge.

Every second we collect AIS data for more than 70 000 vessels from more than 700 AIS satellites and terrestrial senders. We combine this with other types and sources of vessel data.

After we have collected the data we spend time and knowledge in data wrangling; cleaning and unifying messy and complex data sets for easy access and analysis, so you can get the most out of the data.

We also collect marine weather (wind, waves, currents and precipitation), tides, bunker prices and grades in different ports. We have created a sea route calculator and we track port activities from more than 5 000 ports.

In order to build great products, we need to build a great team ourselves! Our existing team has both solid domain knowledge and skilled developers, and we are looking for an experienced Data engineer that will strengthen our tech team.

We are looking for someone with relevant higher (3-5 years) relevant education and then 3 years of relevant work experience. We want you to help us with technical and business problems, so communication skills and the ability to see/find tradeoffs between options is important. You should also have professional working proficiency in English, preferably also Norwegian.

The qualifications we are looking for:

  • Strong Python coding skills (Numpy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn)
  • Experience with databases (PostgresSQL, GraphQL)
  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (regression analysis, clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks.
